WHY WE USE MILLIMETERS TO DESCRIBE THE THICKNESS OF ROCK PAPER INSTEAD OF POUNDS?
Typically, when paper thickness is determined it’s weighed in a ream of 500 sheets cut into a predetermined size based on the paper type.
Generally, the more paper weighs the thicker it is.
This way of measuring does not work for Rock Paper because, Rock Paper is heavier (remember it’s made from rocks).
And we have the data to back that.
FIRST: We cut a thin sheet of Rock Paper to match a standard size sheet of Origami paper, 6×6 inches squared
SECOND: We measured the thickness of each sheet
Rock Paper was 0.076mm thick
Origami paper was 0.078mm thick
THIRD: We weighed each sheet individually
Rock Paper was 0.075oz
Origami paper was 0.041oz
The results
The sheet of Rock Paper was 0.002mm thinner and weighed more than the standard sheet of Origami paper by 0.034 ounces.
This means that using the standard methods to determine paper weight will give false results with Rock Paper.
To test our theory more we did another experiment using 110 pound card stock and Rock Paper that had a similar thickness.
FIRST We cut a thick sheet of Rock Paper and a sheet of 110 pound card stock to 6x6 inches square.
SECOND We measured the thickness of each sheet
Rock Paper was 0.225mm thick
Card stock was 0.239mm thick
THIRD We weighed each sheet individually
Rock Paper was 0.16oz
Card stock was 0.16oz
The results
The thick Rock Paper and card stock weigh the same and further prove that Rock Paper is heavier even though it is thinner.
Don’t let the heaviness intimidate you. Rock Paper has the same usability qualities as its fiber-based counterparts, plus it’s archival and waterproof!
